Members of the Legion of Super-Villains send two shape-shifting Durlans to the 20th century to destroy Superman. Multiple Red Kryptonite meteors strike Superman, causing bizarre effects including wish-fulfillment powers, mind-reading abilities, and the ability to breathe fire. The Durlans also impersonate John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev as part of their scheme.

Although Mister Mxyzptlk made Supergirl immune to regular Kryptonite, Red Kryptonite still affects her. Exposure to six different Red K meteors causes a series of strange transformations, including becoming a wolf-girl, gaining excessive weight, and shrinking to microscopic size.
